September Top Tips

Start to harvest your Autumn fruits, raspberries, blackberries, apples etc and store what you don’t eat in the freezer or cool dry area as appropriate

Place a net over your pond to catch the first of the autumn leaves that start to fall, it will save you lots of work later in the year.

Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn.

Plant spring flowering bulbs – Daffodils, tulips, crocus etc.

Dig up any remaining potatoes so they won’t get damaged by the slugs 

Keep dead heading, feeding & watering your hanging baskets as they will quite often keep going till the first frost.

Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs and force, so that they will produce scented flowers for Christmas.

Empty all your pots of old compost, give them a good clean before putting them away for next year

If your lawn needs re seeding now is the time to do it.

Whens peas and beans have finished cropping, cut away the nitrogen in the roots

Arrange solar lighting along paths of your garden

Plant winter hardy Japanese onion sets

Treat persistent weeds with a good systemic herbicide before they die back for the winter

Get your compost heap/bin ready with lots of leaves, veg tops etc to make your own super nitrogen compost for next year.
